1. Programmable Thermostat
   A programmable thermostat is an inexpensive, effective upgrade that can help you save money on energy if you stick to the program, and don't allow family members to mess with the thermostat when they feel cold or hot. You program the thermostat to cut back on energy use at times when it's least disturbing to the family — say, during the day when they're gone to work or school or at night when they're asleep. Homeowners typically cut back 5 degrees or so, but some may go for 8-10 degrees cooler or warmer. Frequently, homeowners find they have to lock the thermostat from interference so they can realize the savings on the energy bill.
   
   
2. Attic Insulation
   It's obvious why attic insulation keeps you warmer in the winter. As heated air rises, it can't go through the ceiling and be wasted in the attic. But insulation also keeps the home cooler by preventing the heated air in the attic from penetrating the home. How much insulation is enough? One rule of thumb is you shouldn't be able to see your joists. Cover to about 10-14 inches.
   
   
3. Solar Panels

In our climate, the sun shines a lot, so it's easy to collect solar power when you install the panels. The energy that you collect will offset your utility bill, and in a few years, you can make up for the cost of the installation. Although our winters are mild in Tuscaloosa, we use a lot of energy to air condition our homes, so solar panels can offer an excellent way to save money. 4. Energy-efficient Windows
   Energy-efficient windows can provide a 15 percent annual savings on your energy bill — if you get the right windows. You will likely want to install vinyl windows, as they last longer than aluminum and because aluminum insulates less well than vinyl. As to glass, choose double- or triple-pane. Single pane is not efficient. Argon gas is recommended as an insulator, especially in hot climates like ours. Look for Low-E glass, which has a microscopically thin, transparent coating that reflects heat.

   What makes a door energy-efficient? It depends mostly on the material it's made of. For instance, a fiberglass door with a foam core for insulation is rated as highly efficient. Metal doors are somewhat less efficient, while wood is the least efficient door material. The amount of glass in a door will also affect its efficiency. Further, the door frame should be made of efficient material such as fiberglass, and the fit should be tight.
